Ludhiana: Staff nabbed with cash pilfered from ATMs

September 01, 2017 06:18 PM
Police Commissioner RN Dhoke (extreme right) addresses a press conference following the arrest of the employees of a cash service firm in Ludhiana today.

Ludhiana, September 1 - The police have nabbed staff of the SIS cash service agency, which manages cash of various ATMs in the city, and recovered Rs 56 lakh from their possession. The accused, who had misappropriated Rs 1.17 crore, had spent the rest of the amount on their lavish lifestyle.

The arrested persons have been identified as Varun Sachdev of Kishore Nagar and Harpreet Singh of Guru Gobind Singh Nagar, both appointed as custodial at SIS Company; Sukhpal Singh, alias Ronak (former employee of the company), a resident of Jagraon; and Ranjit Singh of Ram Nagar, assistant manager.

Apart from Rs 56-lakh cash, the police have recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 2 lakh, six mobile phones, one laptop, one scooter, one ATM master key and one ATM admin card.

Police Commissioner RN Dhoke, DCP-Crime Gaganajit Singh and ADCP Surendra Lamba conducted a press conference today.

Dhoke said on August 4, company manager Animesh Srivastav had complained to the police that their company managed the cash of 20 ATMs of various banks in the city and its employees, namely Varun and Harpreet, were given the authority to collect cash from banks and then to fill it in various ATMs.

Assistant manager Ranjit Singh and former employee of the company Sukhpal (was recently expelled for embezzlement of cash by the company) connived with the cash custodial men to steal cash from ATMs. “After stealing cash, Varun and Harpreet had gone for holidaying in Goa, Vrindavan, Delhi and at some other hill stations where they spent lavishly,” the CP added.

Revealing their modus operandi, Dhoke said since the accused had authority to collect cash from banks and also had passwords of ATMs, they used to fill less cash in ATMs than what they withdrew from banks. Even when company did an audit of ATM machines, the accused would take the audit teams to only those ATMs where cash balance was as per the bank withdrawals.

Dhoke said since all accused were drawing between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000 salary from the company and were handling cash worth lakhs, they devised a plan to became rich overnight. Varun was already facing seven cases of cheque bounce but the cash service agency still employed him without verifying his criminal record. “We are also probing the role of the security company. If any negligence on their part is established, the police can also recommend cancellation of its licence besides registering a case against it,” Dhoke added.

They transported cash on scooter - Dhoke said as per the rules, whenever a cash service company employees go to banks to collect cash or to fill it in ATMs, they must use a company van meant to transport cash securely. But the accused used a scooter to transport the cash. “The police are investigating the role of other company employees who allowed them to transport huge cash on a scooter,” the CP said.
