High drama as GMADA team locks toddler inside while sealing house

September 01, 2017 06:32 PM
(From left): A constable tries to break open the lock of a room which was sealed by GMADA; toddler Kirandeep Singh is seen sitting on a bed; and the child with his mother after being rescued at Phase XI in Mohali on Thursday.

Mohali, September 1 - High drama was witnessed today in Phase XI when an 18-month-old toddler was locked inside his house after the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) officials sealed the house.

The incident took place around 3.30 pm when the boy, Kirandeep Singh, was alone in the house and his mother, Gurpreet Kaur, had gone to a medical shop in the local market after bolting the main door from outside.

Officials from GMADA assumed that the occupants were not at home and sealed the house, placing a lock on the main entrance. The mother immediately called up the PCR. The police called up the GMADA officials and told them that a toddler had been locked inside.

“I called an assistant engineer of GMADA and explained the situation, but he said he was at Mullanpur and could not come. So I thought the best course of action would be to break open the lock since the cries of the child could be heard from outside,” said Amarpreet Singh, SHO, Phase XI.

“The toddler remained locked for about 35 to 40 minutes. He was crying when we entered the house,” he said.

GMADA had earlier issued notices to the occupants of LIG flats in Phase XI, asking them to submit the documents of allotment. GMADA had threatened the use of force and legal action to get the flats vacated, which were allotted to 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims.

In June, when a GMADA team had gone to get the properties vacated, it faced resistance with some occupants holding protests against the action.
